Steve Fraser’s “Age of Acquiescence” examines the American people’s tumultuous relationship with capitalism. Beginning his study in the Gilded Age of the nineteenth century, Fraser explores changes in that relationship through to the present, what he describes as the “second Gilded Age.” There are clear similarities: people are struggling under the weight of declining wages brought on by technological and corporate innovation and greed, government that sides with business and finance over the interests of average Americans, and the rise of a new plutocracy intent on shaping the American system to their benefit. But, the difference is perhaps more clear. The Gilded Age brought forth a tsunami of popular discontent that took the form of labor organization, strikes, and violence.
