The pay is good, and you and your partner are actually thinking of buying a house in the Bay Area. You like everyone at your job, your manager, your co-workers, except … sometimes you wonder if your manager’s judgment of Alison, one of the few female programmers, is too harsh. He’s usually a nice guy, but you’re uncomfortable with the way he humiliates Alison in staff meetings; it’s true she has problems understanding some parts of the company’s software, but then so do you, so does everyone else on the team. You think that the reason you’re not treated like that is probably because you’re a better programmer than Alison. But you wonder if the reason might actually be that there’s something about Alison that says people can get away with treating her unfairly.One day, your manager says he wants to meet with you the next day to talk about taking a key project from Alison, and giving it to you. To put it mildly, you have mixed emotions. That evening you talk it over with your partner, and in each other’s eyes you can see the glow of your ideals, as well as the allure of that house you dream of purchasing. You come to the silent agreement that you will go to work the next day and do the right thing—whatever that might be.And so.
