Bonus points for a scientists that represents an otherwise underrepresented group of people (in other-words, not an old, white male, ahem Darwin).  2-Describes the Genus that your genius studies. Consider addressing the following: How to differentiate these organisms from other organisms More specifically, what are some key identifying features What morphological characteristics are shared among species in this genus How do they reproduce? Move? The Domain, Kingdom, and Phyla they belong in. Who are they most closely related to? 3-How diverse is this genus? (i.e. approximately how many species in this genus) 4-What kind of human and ecological impacts do members of this genus have? 5-What types of methods or techniques are used to study members of this genus? 6-Describe any current research that is being conducted on/with members of this genus. Some examples of “noteworthy” species in this genus What you find most interesting about this genus of organisms. 7-What is the current status of members of this genus (you can choose to focus on a species here). Are populations increasing? Decreasing? Are any species in this genus on the Endangered Species List? If populations are declining, what is the primary cause? you will also need to include at least 2 journal article that reports research on this genus, or includes this genus in some type of experiment (it is okay to focus on a particular species within this genus).). Provide a brief summary of this journal article, with an emphasis on what it has revealed about your genus of interest. Under “Science and Technology”, select Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (Jstor) Several science journals are now “open access”, meaning that you can access journal articles for free. For example: Public Library of Science (PLoS) Trends in Evolutionary Biology Journal of Biology (For example, see Volume 8, No 2, Special Darwin Issue) International Journal of Plant Biology The Open Ecology Journal (http://bentham.org/open/toecolj/) Visit the UCI library UCI has subscriptions to a tremendous amount of scientific journals, most of which are searchable using Web of Science Google Scholar searches often turn up links to pdf’s of journal articles One final tip. Many authors post pdf files of their published papers on their lab websites. If you’re interested in a particular author (i.e. one whose research seminar you’ve attended), try viewing their website and looking around for papers. Where can I find popular science articles? You can find a number of science journals online and in print that are devoted to communicating science to a general audience. Examples include (but are certainly not limited to!): Popular Science, Science Daily, NY Times Science, LA Times Science, National Geographic How should the paper be formatted? The paper should be a minimum of 1000 words and no more than 1500 words (not including literature cited section, 12 pt font, 1.5 spaced).
