A nursing philosophy is a statement of your fundamental, foundational, and universal assumptions, beliefs, and principles about the nature of nursing. In lesson six you will write a paper about your own personal philosophy of nursing and compare your definitions with a selected nursing theory. For this lesson, you will begin to draw from your previous academic and work experiences to gather your information and thoughts to get organized. You will receive individual feedback from your instructor on your outline. The more details that you include, the more opportunity you will have for feedback. This will allow the paper writing process in a later lesson to go smoothly and timely. Please follow the outline below as a skeleton for your outline and paper. I have also provided a template at the end with more details to get you started. The reading for this lesson can really help to guide the development of your personal philosophy if needed.Introduction: Set the stage to make the paper appealing and intriguing.Definition of Human Being: This is your definition of what a “human being” is and how the “human being” is composed. Compare your definition to one theorist’s definition and give examples.Definition of Environment: This is your definition of what is meant by “environment”, both internal/external, in terms of the human being. Compare your definition to one theorist’s definition and give examples.Definition of Health: This is your definition of what is meant by “health” in terms of the “human being”. Remember, this is not asking for the definition of “healthy”, but what is “health”, “good health”, “poor health”, and where does “death” or “absence of health” fit in the schema. Compare your definition to one theorist’s definition and give examples.Definition of Nursing: This is your definition of “nursing”. This should be a broad, but thorough definition, not specific only to your practice area. Think about comprehensive, solid, evidenced-based, patient-centered care. Compare your definition to one theorist’s definition and give examples.State the relationship of each of the four concepts comprising the nursing metaparadigm (human being, environment, health, and nursing) to each other and how one affects the other. Please feel free to add a section to this paper on caring if you would like as it has recently been added to this metaparadigm, this is optional for the paper but a common element in many philosophies. Summary: Summarize the salient information from all the concepts above. As you have seen above, you are to compare your personal thoughts with a nursing theory. A common question from students is, “Do I use one theory or more than one?”. This will be unique to each of you. It may be that you fully embrace one particular theory, or it may be that your personal philosophy draws from more than one. I have attached a link below to a great website to get you thinking, but there are many sources on this topic.Petiprin, A. (2015) Nursing Theory. Retrieved from http://nursing-theory.org/articles/nursing-theories-and-a-philosophy-of-nursing.php.http://nursing-theory.org/articles/nursing-theories-and-a-philosophy-of-nursing.phpYour outline must be clear as to how you will address each of the required topics above (your personal definition should be the standout piece of each section, as this paper topic is your personal philosophy). I would also like you to include (roughly) the citations that will be used for each section, as well as a complete reference list. You will need at least 3 scholarly sources referenced for this paper. APA formatting is something that is new to some of you and this will allow you to benefit from instructor feedback on the formatting as well prior to writing your paper. Please refer to the brief video for general writing help that you have previously found in the Resources link on the left.
