Many of the artworks considered in this chapter are interactive. Performance art incorporates many of the elements traditionally associated with theater, but in the context of the world of visual art and its venues. Conceptual art emphasizes the ideas behind a work of art. Installations transform a given space and generally immerse viewers in an artwork; space can be manipulated by artists to highlight considerations outside the artwork itself, such as social and historical context. Step 2 Choose TWO (2) examples of artwork made in alternative media or with alternative processes: one from this chapter, and one from elsewhere (another chapter in the textbook, one from your own research, online, etc.). For each artwork, identify whether it is a conceptual work, a performance piece, or an installation. Describe each artwork in your own words.Then, consider the role of the viewers in each of your artworks. Describe the role of the viewers. How is their role affected by the medium? For example, are they active or passive? Some alternative artworks are now known only through photographs or video, whereas some can still be experienced in real life. How might the viewer’s role have changed from when the work was initially created? Would you have liked to participate in any of these artworks?
