Chapter 3
So last week I asked the difference between a liability and an expense. So this week I am continuing the discussion for better understanding. Liabilities are what you owe. Yes most of you posted this. They are also on the Balance Sheet. There are current and long term liabilities where current are due to be paid in the next twelve months and long term are due longer than one year. Many of you put that Liabilities must be paid, but that is not entirely true. If you do not pay what you owe, your suppliers stop delivering product. If you do not pay your employees, they will not work for you anymore. If you do not pay your loans, your assets get repossessed.
Expenses are costs, USED, EXPIRED. So in other words an expense is something you have used and cannot get back. You have used your cell phone minutes and cannot get them back each month.
So my question this week is: How can one transaction involve an expense and a liability? The answer is very simple. Do not go to the book and repeat what the authors wrote. That would be plagiarism. Besides, I would not see that you understand if you do not use your own words.
