Learning objective: COMMUNICATION WITH AND ON BEHALF OF OLDER PERSONS: Engage, through effective communication older persons, their families and the community, in personal and public issues of aging.
WELL-BEING, HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH: Promote older persons’ strengths and adaptations to maximize well-being, health and mental health.
PROGRAM/SERVICE DEVELOPMENT: Students will be able to employ and design programmatic and community development projects with and on behalf of the aging population.
Assignment description
For this assignment, students will create a compliance training handout based on a current event/news article relating to our course – select one of the weekly topics we will cover this semester, and look for a news article or industry alert. You should include a link to the news article in the handout, and include your comment about why you think the article is interesting or important. Your handout should be 1-2 pages, 12 point type, double-spaced. I want you to approach this from the standpoint of a nursing home or other facility administrator, and you are highlighting a news article to educate your employees and bring their attention to an issue that is important to legal compliance at your facility. You can use pictures, charts, graphs, and graphics to make the handout look professional. Your handout can include a description of the policy at your facility that is relevant to the training.

Choose a weekly topic you will focus on for your compliance handout. Your topics can include any of the following: Ethics, Informed Consent, Guardianship, Death and Dying, Advance Directives, Assisted Suicide, Fair Housing, ADA, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Social Security Disability, Nursing Homes, Assisted Living, Home Health, Hospice, Human Resources, Fraud and Abuse, Emergency Preparedness, Elder Abuse. You can cover anything related to caring for the elderly that has a legal compliance issue.
Research to find a relevant news article about your topic. You can use any reputable source. For example, you can Google your topic and select the news tab to find good articles.

Develop your handout. Think about what policy you might have at your facility that is related to the news article. You do not have to create a detailed policy – it can be simple like “Avoiding Elder Abuse” or “Keeping Patients Safe”.
Write a summary of the important points in the article that you want your employees to understand. Tell your employees what you want them to learn from the article, and how they should use it to improve how they deal with elderly people. The example is attached.
