Program of Study
PhD in Psychology – MS Entry/Self Design
Social Problem or Phenomenon of Interest: Psychological issues among the unemployed youths are on the rise in the United States as well as in other western nations.
Research Problem: The scholarly community is unaware of psychological issues of the unemployed graduates in the United States compared to the other countries in the western hemisphere, calling for the entrusted stakeholders’ need to identify and address the issues associated with the rise of the psychological issues among the youths.
Research Purpose: This quantitative research aims to determine to which extent there exist psychological issues between the unemployed youth in the United States, when compared to other countries. The primary objective of the research is to identify adversities associated with youth unemployment in the western nation and the other global countries.
Research Question: What is the extent of psychological issues among unemployed youths in the United States compared to other countries?
Qualitative Research
Social Problem or Phenomenon of Interest: Psychological issues are on the rise among the unemployed youths in the United States compared to the other western nations.
Research Problem: Many community members are unaware of the factors that increase the adversities associated with unemployment among the youths in the United States compared to those in other western countries.
Research Purpose: This educative research study aims to determine the reason for the increased levels of vulnerabilities of the adolescents residing in the United States compared to those residing in other western countries. The study’s main aim is to enlighten the responsible parties to address undesirable psychological issues and attempt to identify the link between the psychological tensions and reasons that can be related to national cultures.
Research Question: What additional factors increase the psychological vulnerability of unemployed adolescents in the United States compared to those residing in other western countries?
Theoretical Framework
This theoretical framework will be based upon the Cognitive Learning Theory (CLT) as well as on the Theory of Mind (ToM). This theoretical base will define the gap in the literature, which pertains to the lack of research studies on the unemployed individuals. The Cognitive Learning Theory (CLT) as well as the Theory of Mind will be used in this study, pointing to the demand and needs of those unemployed. The research design of this text can be considered as an experimental design, being a pre-test / post-test control group design. From a theoretical point of view, the search will be based on theoretical starting points for solving a observed phenomenon or topic on basic publications of Grant and Osanloo (2014), as well as on Creswell and Creswell (2017) or, even worse, on his own experience. The authors focus on the study and drawing of knowledge of the field also including professional consultations, not only with teachers, but also experts in practice and interviews with the relevant institutions in which the research will take place.

Week 1 Discussion
You have selected an interesting topic and I look forward to seeing how you develop it.
For your revisions, I would like for you to focus on alignment and use of parallel language. For example, the problem you have suggested is different from your purpose and question. In the problem you mention investigating levels of unemployment while the purpose and question are both focused on determining the extent of psychological issues among the unemployed. They should all be focused on the same thing.
Make sure that all three concepts (problem, purpose, and question (PPQ)) are well aligned using parallel language. For example, Problem: “The scholarly community does not understand the impact of job training on recidivism rates of individuals who have been convicted of drug offenses.” Purpose: “The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine the impact of job training on the recidivism rates of individuals who have been convicted of drug offenses.” Question: “How does job training impact the recidivism rates of individuals who have been convicted of drug offenses.” As you can see, the language is parallel and they are well aligned. There is nothing extra included. All three sections have the same basic constructs addressed.
Your next assignment will focus on a theoretical or conceptual framework to provide structure to your concept. This can be very tricky. Make sure that you have a good theoretical basis for the investigation and that it is stated very explicitly. The connections must be overt and communicated with clarity. Make sure that you apply my feedback to your next revision.
Week 2 Discussion
Good job on your revisions. I think you can simplify your language in the problem and purpose sections a bit more. Try to get down to the fewest words possible. You did a good job with that on your quant research question so maybe start there. The wording on the problem and purpose lead me to think there is more going on than what you indicate in your question so make sure they are aligned and the wording is very focused and concise.
Choose one theory. Make sure to define it and apply it to your study.
The theoretical approach needs some additional work. The theory needs to be strong to support the research. You have a good start, but I need you to do a couple of things to make it stronger. 1) Define the theory (e.g. Social Contract Theory is…) 2) Describe how it relates directly to your study (i.e. the mechanism for how body language might impact generational impacts of addiction) 3) Provide more detail and specifics or an example to illustrate.
Here is a resource that can help: https://academicguides.waldenu.edu/library/conceptualframework
The theory is the knowledge basis of the phenomena you intend to study. Think about what you know about the phenomena. How do you know it? What underlying theory have you internalized to base your predictions upon? What assumptions have you made?
Theories are constructed to explain and predict phenomena. They are the foundation upon which the hypotheses are built.
Think about: Why do we need theory? What does a theory provide that is essential to the research process? What would research look like without theory?
Take a closer look at my recent announcement on theory. It defines theoretical frameworks in much greater detail and provides examples. If you need more examples, let me know and I can dig some up for you.
Next week will require the addition of three new sections, Design, Sampling Strategy, and Data Collection, so make sure you give yourself enough time.
