Summary Essay Peer Review Instructions
1) Does the student begin by telling us a) the title of the piece (in quotes), b) the author, and c) the main argument of the essay? (NOTE: The main argument is different than just the essay’s main topic; it is the main idea the author wants her/his audience to agree with)
2) Does the student summarize the whole article or does the summary mainly focus on one part?
3) Has the student chosen an effective organization for her/his summary? Are there logical paragraph breaks? Are some paragraphs too short or too long?
4) Has the student left out all opinion or evaluation?
5) Is there an appropriate level of detail for a 1.5 – 2 page summary?
6) Are there any details you think are unnecessary? Are there any important points left out?
7) Are there any points that require clarification?
8) Has the student mainly used her/his own words and her/his own sentence structure? Are there some sentences that sound too similar to the original essay? Which ones?
9) Does the last paragraph’s last sentence conclude the summary by emphasizing the essay’s conclusion?
10) Are there any significant grammar errors, particularly errors that get in the way of a sentence’s meaning?
