Ask yourself the following questions when considering your topic:

Was this region colonized? Before, during, or after the time you’re looking at?
If so, will you be looking at the dress of the colonizers or the colonized? Or at an intersection of the two?
Dress is a reflection of the society it exists within. What was happening in that society politically, religiously, economically, culturally, etc.? How did these affect the dress?
Are you looking at a specific item of dress or a larger practice?
Is it famous or obscure? How can this shape how we read it?
Who does your dress reflect? What was their position in society? Are you looking at an empress’ gown? A peasant’s only set of clothing? An item worn at weddings or funerals? Was it gender specific? Were there laws governing who could and who could not wear it? If there weren’t laws, were there economic of social boundaries that restricted who wore it, or when?
Where and when was it worn? Be as specific as possible.
