We all employ different types of thinking, two of which are disjunctive and conjunctive thinking. Disjunctive thinking reflects a competitive mindset. It is a tendency to view options in isolation from each other (e.g., either you win or you lose, either you’re right or you’re wrong, either this or that, etc.). Conjunctive thinking reflects a more collaborative mindset. It is a tendency to combine or synthesize parts of two (or more) options in order to create a superior alternative (e.g., I can pursue a well-paying job and have a fulfilling marriage, I can study for the exam and still go out on the weekends, etc.)
Examine these two types of thinking. What are the pros and cons of each? Which one do you normally employ? Which would you prefer to employ? How might these types of thinking impact the way you argue?
