Persuasion is the act of attempting either to change an individual or group’s point of view on a debatable issue and/or getting that individual or group to take some type of action. So, choose a contemporary issue and construct a sound argument in essay form that seeks to change the mind of an individual or group and/or persuade them to take some form of action. First, you will choose a debatable issue; you may write about the topic you chose for your Opinion Essay. Second, you will choose a position to argue from. Third, you will find reasons and outside evidence to support your claim. Finally, you will construct a Works Cited page that lists the sources you used to support your argument.
Successful essay will include the following elements:
An introduction that includes a hook, background information on the issue, and a thesis statement that clearly informs the reader of your stance or position as well as a conclusion that includes a final plea, projects into the future, urges readers to take a specific action, or calls for further study and research. An MLA-style Works Cited page that lists your sources used to support your argument.
At least three body paragraphs that begin with a topic sentence that corresponds to one of your three reasons that supports your argument. Each body paragraph will also include at least one piece of evidence in the form of a quotation or paraphrase that is properly formatted per MLA style and is followed by commentary that explains its significance.
Be written in an academic tone that illustrates appropriate word choice and vocabulary usage and be carefully proofread, paying special attention to grammar and spelling. Also, your first page must be formatted correctly per MLA style.
