possible. Make sure that you are answering the specific questions posed, and that you fully elaborate upon all
of the arguments/concepts you discuss.
1) According to Federici, why were the witch-hunts necessary for the transition to capitalism?
2) Compare Hadden & Skolnick/Fyfe’s approaches to the relationship between police and
vigilantes/vigilantism.
Your exam (including answers to both questions) may not exceed a total of 4 pages (double spaced, 12-point
font, 1-inch margins).
All references to authors’ claims/arguments must be accompanied by citation. The requirement for citation is
not limited to direct quotations – you must provide citation every time you refer to any idea, claim or
argument forwarded by the authors (even when it is presented in your own words). This means that there
should be extensive citation throughout your exam. Use parenthetical citation – providing the relevant
page number in parentheses at the end of each sentence being cited, for example (159). Use the original text
page numbers (not the course reader page numbers). There is no need to include a bibliography.
Grading Criteria:
1) ACCURACY: Exhibiting strong mastery of the readings. The goal is to illustrate that you have an accurate
and thorough understanding of the course materials. You will be assessed on your ability to identify the most
crucial relevant arguments/concepts and your accuracy and thoroughness in presenting them.
2) COMPREHENSIVENESS: Answers that are as comprehensive and developed as possible. Exams will be
assessed in terms of how much relevant information they are able to cover within the specified page limit. This
necessitates concise and well edited responses that aim to be succinct in order to be as thorough as possible.
3) CITATION: Full citation that exhibits that all claims/arguments have been directly identified in the
readings – not just summarizing class lectures.
4) EDITING: Polished submission that reflects careful editing. Essays should be well organized and have no
typos. While you will not be graded on your mastery of the English language or your writing skills, it is
expected that you take the necessary time to edit and organize your essays.
