What are two most important ‘operational’ issues or problems that this company is experiencing, which influence the company relatively for a short term (within a year)? e.g.) specific departmental issues (e.g., need to hire a few more staff, web server was down for a few days) or certain activities (e.g., holiday promotions had an error). The goal for operational issues is to get the work done for the company, not to do better than its competitors.
What are two most important ‘strategic’ issues or problems of the company, which impact or will impact the company as a whole (not just one or a few departments) in a long term (2-5 years) in its achieving its mission, competitive advantage, and/or survival, in a significant way? e.g.) Climate change, sustainability and corporate responsibility are critical issues for every business; Apple’s iPhone had a seriously negative long-term impact on the camera industry and wrist watch industry; Changes in law and regulations relevant to the company’s industry can make a huge impact on the company’s future; Frequent replacement of and difficulty in finding a good CEO and/or consumer preference changes have big impacts on the company; Strong competitors’ expansion into the company’s markets can pose a serious threat; The company’s expansion to international markets can be risky and uncertain; The company’s recent mergers and/or acquisitions can change the company significantly.
It’s critical that you clearly understand the differences between ‘operational’ and ‘strategic’ issues, as the Capstone Project must be based on ‘strategic’ (long-term, significant) not ‘operational’ issues (short-term, influence only part of the company).
