Before working on this assignment, I want you to look at this photo series (Links to an external site. https://www.life.com/history/war-on-poverty-appalachia-portraits-1964/) of the War on Poverty in Appalachia. Appalachia is a cultural region in the United States that stretches from New York to Alabama and Georgia. For more than 50 years, the people of Appalachia have been subject to stereotypes of homogeneity and impoverishment because of these pictures, regardless of how much time has passed. In the series we will be looking at today, “Looking at Appalachia”, (Links to an external site. https://lookingatappalachia.org/home) photographer Roger May and nearly 600 professional and hobbyist photographers throughout Appalachia have come together to create a visual counterpoint to the pictures produced by President Lyndon B Johnson in 1964. Through this photo series, they are able to highlight some of Appalachia’s diversity – geographically, socioeconomically, and culturally – while complicating the longstanding narrative of Appalachia.
