Write a review on the short story- “Invitations” by Carol Shields.While reading the story, try to think about the actions of the characters, how the point of view influences the story, and what themes you find in the story. Let’s First Review:Character: Characters are what makes a story come to life and there are different characterizations of characters. Here are the different types of characters that you need to become familiar with.1) Protagonist- Is the central person in a story and is mostly known as the main character.2) Antagonist- Is a character that the protagonist must contend with in a story. Someone they are against.3) Static Character- Is someone who does not change over time, they always stay the same.4) Flat Character- Has one kind of personality trait or characteristic.5) Dynamic Character- Is a character that changes over time usually due to a conflict or crisis.6) Round Character- Is a character who has a complex personality and is often seen as a person who contradicts themselves.7) Stock Character- Instantly recognizable to a reader, for example, they are the femme fatale or the mad scientist, etc. They are normally one dimensional characters. They are usually stereotypical.8) Foil Character- Is a character whose behaviours, opinions and attitudes contrast with the protagonist. This helps you, the reader to understand the protagonist even more.Point of View: A point of view is essentially that, the point of view chosen by the author for which to tell the story. These are the classic points of view you should be familiar with.1) First Person Point of View- Told in the first person of “I” such as “I was walking through a path towards the garden when I saw a man”.2) Third Person Point of View- The narrator tells us how the characters feel and what they see, for example, “she was walking through a path towards the man who she thought she knew”.3) Objective Point of View- When the narrator tells the story to the reader, without discussing what the characters’ thoughts are.4) Omnisicent Point of View- Basically means that the author knows everything about all the characters.5) Limited Omniscient Point of View- When the author knows everything about one character.Theme: The theme is the underlying meaning of a short story. In order for the reader to understand the theme of a story, they must study and know the characters, setting and plot rather well. A theme is NOT what the story is about, it is WHAT the author is saying, about what it is about.
