Discuss Ethics of Fraud.

Scientists can be one of the least trusted professions by the general public, ranked even lower than lawyers(!). Consider the borderline between scientific misconduct and honest mistakes. Why do you think there is so much mistrust? Why do you think cases of scientific fraud, like what was discussed with Wakefield or others in the Top 10 Retractions, occur? Why do they continue to occur, despite investigative journalists (and others) efforts to prevent it?
