Bryant, persuasion “is the process of adjusting ideas to people and people to ideas.” To be an audience-centered persuasive speaker is to use ethical and effective strategies to adjust your message so that listeners will thoughtfully respond to your presentation. Persuasive Speech Details – To be discussed in class Requirements: Topic: must be approved in advance. Time Frame: 6-7 minutes in length (SPEECHES UNDER 6 MIN WILL BE PENALIZED 2 PTS/30 SECOND CHUNK) Time limits are strictly enforced. You will be given a signal when you reach 6:30 indicating you have 30 seconds remaining. You are encouraged to wrap up your speech at this point because you will be stopped at 7 minutes. Delivery: Extemporaneous Delivery – utilizing ONLY three, single-sided 3×5 note cards. Components: How well does your speech meet the descriptions of an Persuasive Speech in Problem, Cause, Solution format, including: At least one logical appeal and one emotional appeal must be used. A call to action Structure: Appropriate organizational structure must be used. (Including but not limited to a thesis statement, a preview statement, an organizational structure, transitional statements, required components of an introduction and conclusion)
Sources: At least FIVE legitimate and different outside sources must be used and cited in the speech. Only ONE may be a website. Please note the correct format for citing sources in a speech. Make sure you use different types of sources (website, book, magazine, etc.), and mention at least one idea from each of these sources in your speech. These sources need to be written at the end of your preparation outline as references, using APA style. References: An APA formatted Reference Page, including your FIVE legitimate and different outside sources, turned in on speech day. Support: At least FOUR different types of support materials must be used, and indicated parenthetically within outline. Visual Aids: You may use up to two visual aids. Electronic Media: PowerPoint and/or Video Clips: All electronic materials must be submitted to Dawn electronically VIA THIS DROPBOX no later than 24 Hours before your speech. Failure to do so may prohibit your using them for your speech. Video Clips should ideally be between 30-45 seconds. Dress: to meet minimum requirements, dress one step above your usual classroom attire. Podium: may NOT be used.
