Are there differences between the older ones and the newer ones?

We have been learning a lot about how the news represents events and people but what about our fiction? For the next class writing assignment, you will be doing a comparison of sitcoms and answering questions regarding representation in sitcoms. Remember the things to look for are. Authorship: Who created this message? Format: Media messages are constructed using a creative language with its own rules Audience: How might different people understand this message differently? Content: What values, lifestyles and points of view are represented in or omitted from this message? Purpose: Why is this message being sent? Remember most media messages are organized to gain profit and/or power Your choices of sitcoms to compare are:. 1. The Cosby Show and Black-ish. 2. Fresh Off the Boat and All-American Girl (Margaret Cho Sitcom). 3. Modern Family and Family Ties. 4. Will & Grace (pre-2006) and Grown-ish. The Big Bang Theory and The Mindy Project. Roseanne (pre-1997) and Everybody Hates Chris . These are all widely available in multiple platforms. Pick one of the pairs above and then screen 2-3 episodes of each show.. Write 750-1000 words (3-4 pages, double spaced) that explores, compares and contrasts the following:. the portrayal of family in both series. the way the shows talk (or don’t talk) about race, gender, class, sexual orientation what techniques are used – how do they use the sitcom format? Do they all “follow the formula?” Are there differences between the older ones and the newer ones? what values and/or points of view are overt and implied Use examples of specific scenes and dialogue in your paper..
