Step 1: Choose three of the films that we have watched for this class (in class or in a screening or on the playlists below) that you think have some commonality such as a theme or formal device. The idea is to find some thread that links the three films in some way. Some examples of themes: the city, the natural world, queer identity, feminism, ethnography, self-representation, visual music. Some examples of formal devices: repetition, abstraction, juxtaposition, superimposition, duration, found footage.
Step 2: Choose one sequence from each film that you plan to focus on in your analysis. Give a brief description of each.
Step 3: Once you have chosen your “thread” and your three films, do some research about each film. For instance, find out about the production of each film, the filmmakers, and/or the context in which the film was produced. You need to find two relevant academic, peer-reviewed sources for each film. List them in Chicago bibliographic format with a brief summary (3-5 sentences) of the essay/chapter.
Note: If you choose a more recent film, you will likely not find much about that specific film or filmmaker, so you might have to look for more general articles about your topic using broader search terms, i.e., “experimental found footage film” or “experimental film” AND “repetition.”
