Compare and contrast the ways that ‘horizontal’ music can be organized. ‘Horizontal’ music is music that is not built over vertical harmonies (chords), it is not dependent upon the ‘resolution’ of harmonic dissonances to create forward motion like much western music is. Horizontal music is sometimes dependent upon rhythm, or melody, or the sounds and roles of instruments, or the tempo (speed) at which the music unfolds. Sometimes it’s a combination of those things. Please choose three of the four horizontal music cultures we have explored: Arab Music (Egypt), China, Indonesia (Java or Bali), and North India and determine, as well as you can, how each of those three musics is propelled – or not propelled, dependent on the purpose of the music.
