Demonstrate awareness of the impact of industry, including firm characteristics and strategies, on how technology emerges

This assignment requires student teams to apply course learnings in a report addressed to the Queensland Office of the Chief Scientist on a controversial emerging technology. Teams are to select one of three technologies for their report including either artificial intelligence, 5G, or Coal Seam Gas. Technologies are brought to the market, and society more broadly, through firms operating within industry. Teams are encouraged to analyse their chosen technology as part of a broader ‘field’ or ‘ecosystem’ which includes firms but also government and other key stakeholders. Students should also recognise the global nature of idea management and what occurs in one jurisdiction or geography may have implications elsewhere.
In developing this report, teams should consider how concepts from the idea management course can help explain the emergence of the technology. As post graduate students it is expected that the team will apply and analyse the relevant concepts learnt during the course to the technology. The concepts include, but are not limited to, concepts covered in Weeks 7-10. These can include the way firms manage intellectual property, organise for innovation, engage in new product or service development, and seek to improve processes and shape policies in order to bring a technology to market. Some concepts will be more relevant to some technologies than others. Ultimately, this report should be developed to help inform and guide the Queensland Office of the Chief Scientist in creating advice for firm practice and government policy.
