I shadowed an MD. He was an internal medicine MD. Most of his patients were presenting for follow up and intensive toxicity assessment with blood work. I have always thought that MDs are the only healthcare providers who have direct contact with patients and help patients. One of these patients asked the doctor about a few drugs that the patient was on and wanted to know the side effects and risk factors associated with it. The doctor could not clearly answer the patient so he told them that he will get the pharmacist and review the medications’ side effects and risk factors. Shadowing and volunteering in a healthcare environment made me realize everyone’s contribution in patient care. Volunteering at hospitals and clinics helps us understand each profession’s worth and value.
