Here is a decent one page explanation of what a historiography strives to do: https://qcpages.qc.cuny.edu/writing/history/critical/historiography.html (Links to an external site.)What you are going to do is pick one historical figure or event and find six sources that offer their explanation/interpretation of things. They are going to disagree on certain aspects and may offer seemingly contradictory views. That’s fine and in fact, that’s sort of what you are going for. A historiography does NOT seek to give “the answer” nor asks the author to provide their “answer” (an analytical essay asks you do to this, you will write one later in the course). Instead, a historiography paper strives to present how a historical topic is understood. A good historiography will notes the differences in interpretations, compare and contrast them, and perhaps comment on the significance of those differences. You aren’t being ask to provide your own assessment. Instead you are asked to explore several sometimes contradictory sources. The purpose of an historiographic essay is threefold:1.) to allow you to view an historical event or issue from multiple perspectives by engaging multiple sources2.) to display your mastery over those sources and over the event itself3.) to develop your critical reading skills as you seek to answer why your sources disagree, and what their disagreement tells you about the event or issue and the very nature of history itself. This is only 4 pages so don;t kill yourself or feel you are the one that’s all of a sudden going to reconcile the 200+ years of divergent opinion on say Robespierre or the Great Terror during the French revolution.Just let me know that you have a grasp of the different interpretations and what those differences may tell us about the bigger picture and you’ll do fine.
