This part focuses more fully on Learning Outcome 4, and requires you to demonstrate:• Engagement and rapport• Listening• Verbal and non-verbal communication• Relational awareness and reflexivity Part 3 : A 1000 word reflective commentary on the recorded session. Counselling is the practise of facilitating personal growth through adversity. Professional counselling training mirrors this process. For this reason, skills development relies strongly on feedback from peers and staff. Learning to be a counsellor requires you to get good at being not-yet competent and reflecting on what did not work. This ability to reflect on and respond to feedback remains vital throughout the counsellor’s career (not just in training). This means listening to feedback openly and non-defensively and reflecting on it. As with the recording itself, there is no expectation of professional competence in practice. However, you are required to demonstrate ability to reflect on your practice and learn from it.In this part of the portfolio you will reflect on what worked well (and what didn’t) and on your internal process (what was ‘going on’ in your thoughts/experiencing) and in the relationship with your ‘client’ (what was ‘going on’ between you). You will find detailed guidance on moodle on how to format this commentary and the seminars will provide the forum to discuss how to approach this task.
