This week, you are going to build a scatter plot in Excel. Using the data from the first video (age and height), create a scatter plot in excel. The second video shows you how to do this. As you watch the video, write down the numbers that are given for age and height so that you can enter them in excel. Save these numbers in excel as you will be using them again.
Your scatter plot should include:
Heading for the ID and DV. Please make sure you identify which is the ID and DV; also state how you know which is which (according to the definitions NOT the video pointing to ID and DV).
Discuss how each variable was measured; how did they get those numbers?
Are the variables categorical or quantitative; how do you know this?
Next you are going to calculate the correlational coefficient r (also using excel). Go to the following web page for directions to do this: https://sciencing.com/graph-distribution-ttest-8523756.html. (Links to an external site.)
Please explain what this r value means.
What is the direction and strength?
What does the strength indicate?Cohen’s guidelines for evaluating strength of association (based on r)
How well does the data support the conclusion? How do you know this?
If the p value was significant, what would this mean?
In this example, the sample size is small; do you think that the small sample is impacting the statistical significance? Why or why not?
Finally, watch the following video and enter in the data that you used above. Make sure you end up with the same results! Will will be using Vassar Stats in the coming chapters.
