Uncategorized Assignment-helpKaren Robinson, RN has been the manager for Cardiac Rehabilitation Services at a large inner city, acute care hospital for 4 years. Karen reports directly to the MD Chief of Cardiology, and is a highly respected professional, well liked by staff, peers, patients, and frequently provides direct patient care during periods of staff shortages. Within the last 3 months, the hospital has experienced a series of layoffs due to downsizing in an attempt to maintain financial viability and prevent closing of the facility. Karen, along with several other managers was assigned two additional departments to manage as the hospital struggled to reallocate diminished resources using multi-department managing. In the past, Karen had very little difficulty managing her original department however, with the added work and responsibilities that inevitably accompanied the task of managing 3 large departments, Karen encountered significant issues. She had limited experience with critical areas of the new departments such as credentials, risk management and project management. Her new (and old) direct reports complained that she was inconsistent, unclear in directions and was not supportive during periods of staff shortages and demonstrated poor crisis management skills. Subsequently, morale in all three departments declined, and Karen began to disengage as she felt ineffective and overwhelmed by the additional workload and management responsibilities. Despite these mounting problems, Karen felt uncomfortable to ask for help out of fear of losing her job.Questions:Review the case within the context of leadership style and competencies for leading people and managing resources.
