Discuss the role of NP in Cultivating and Sustaining Civility.

Civility in the workplace enhances the relationship between a colleague and encourages them to perform their duties effectively. The quality of civility in the workplace affects the services rendered to the patients. Nurse practitioners have been identified as a particular group that can cultivate and sustain civility in the workplace through their position and actions. Nurse practitioners are highly involved in professional role modeling, which lays a foundation for civility and respect (Clark, 2017). Professional role models are careful and accountable for their actions, behaviors, and relationships with others. They encourage each other, collaborate, admit mistakes, and share information to make the workplace suitable. Nurse practitioners are vital professionals in impacting communication and conflict-negotiation skills. They have the responsibility of leading through their actions by implementing meaningful conversations and successful negotiating skills. Behavioral norms are set for the successful running of various teams in the hospital. Nurse practitioners can engage other nurses in learning and implementing behavioral norms.

Uncivil behavior takes numerous forms in the workplace. It ranges from rumors to false accusations. These behaviors may be motivated by factors not known to the perpetrator. For instance, a nurse leader who keeps shouting at her staff may be experiencing abuse or emotional trauma due to issues in her daily life. It is essential to dig into the deeper causes of incivility in the workplace. Incivility in the workplace may be solved through seeking assistance from the supervisor, who can mediate between the victim and the perpetrator. The supervisor would implement conflict solving and negotiation skills, which are essential for humans.

Self-reflection in the workplace identifies the problems or concerns that a person may be unaware of. The hospital environment places nurses under intense stress and anxiety, which may affect their emotional intelligence and their ability to evaluate themselves. Self-reflection reminds nurses that they are humans, and they need to evaluate and adjust their environment for optimal functioning (Clark, Olender, Cardoni & Kenski, 2011). It is essential to implement self-reflection in the workplace.
