At the beginning of the semester, our opening discussion questioned the importance of the “great writers” we set out to study. We talked critically about the usefulness of this course and asked whether it should even exist. As we have read and talked together so far, digging into texts by English writers from the 1900s, the central concerns of that conversation remain with us:Are these texts relevant to our lives in any way? Do we identify at all with any of these characters or stories? If so, how? If not, what makes our own experience so disconnected from what’s in these books?
