Final Exam/ MUS 150: Music Appreciation Fall 2023 Directions: You are to respond to each of the following questions completely and concisely. You will need a well-developed, multiple-paragraph essay for each, which leave nothing for me to assume. For each of the questions, I am looking for you to reflect on what you have studied this semester and how it applies to a broader scope. You are to use your own ideas as the basis with reference to the text where applicable to develop the content of each response. Make sure you develop your information specific material/background from the text. I am looking for both quantity and quality. Most of all, do your best writing and leave nothing for me to assume. Most importantly think before you begin to write. You will need at least 2 to 3 pages, double-spaced, for each response for full credit. Treat each item as an essay. Each question is designed for you to set parameters and write using specific reference to what you have studied this semester. There are three questions at 50 points each. Remember this will be added to your cumulative grade then figured on the average of the total points. Also, stay away from ‘the Romantic Period.” Rather try to narrow your focus to a period of time that occurs during the overall time period. This will make it easier for you to work with historical perspectives. In that discussion, place music as the primary focus. What, within the given period of time, gives form and structure to the music of the day? Use several solid examples to explain your answer.

2. The name of the course is Music Appreciation. What specifically does that mean? In terms of what you have studied this summer, define the term. In addition, I want you to imagine the following situation. Imagine that you have been given the task of setting up a short course in music appreciation, based on the definition you have given. What would you include and why? In other words, pick out what you think is important to include in such a course. You should consider styles, artists, composers, time frames, instrumentation, music theory (essentially Part I of the text). Needless to say you have to think in terms of what you think is important. Make sure that you substantiate your response with specific information.

3. Choose any one contemporary artist, style, composer, group, etc., that you find worthy of study. Explain the merit of this person, concept, style, genre, etc., to me as though I have no concept of what you are talking about. Using what you have learned this semester in terms of music, make me understand what you like and why . . . . Most of all don’t simply pull something that you think I would like for you to write about—Write about what truly interests you. In some cases you will be making critical judgments in your essay, so support them accordingly. In particular, consider your choice as it would contribute to the history of music in the future. [Make sure you understand the term comtemporary!!]

Note: Set your parameters within the context of the questions and respond. Again, remember to justify what you say. Do not leave anything for me to assume!!! AND, reflect on what you have studied this semester!!
