If this option is selected the paper should include a short biography of the director and a short history of the film’s production. The student is then to attack the film scene by scene (each time the camera changes locations) and complete a reading of the film. The student is to not only look at the plot, story line and dialogue but also exam the director’s finger prints on the film. The student will examine the lighting, frame composition and camera angle and movement. After reading the student paper the reader should be able to visualize the film scene by scene and understand what the director was attempting to do and if she/he was effective.Option Two: Select in director and offer a complete analysis of his or her work. If this option is selected the paper should include a brief history of the director. The paper would then attack the director’s work as a whole or focus in on a single theme that has appeared in several of the director’s work. It would seem impossible to attack each of John Ford’s films, (well over 80) but a student could identify a single theme that Ford worked with in a group of his films. After reading the student’s paper the reader would have an understanding of what style and themes the director felt were important to include in her work. It would be necessary for the student to focus or limit the thesis of the paper as to prevent a meandering project.Option Three: Select a Genre of film and identify outstanding examples of this genre. The student would first have to define and developed the key icons of the genre and discuss how the genre has developed over the years. If this option is selected the paper should include a complete listing of films that fit in to the students definition of the genre, and an analysis of each film. Examples of genres are horror, science fiction, war, film noir, musicals and western. The paper should also include a short summary of the principles of each film discussed. On a date posted on the time line the student will post in a short abstract. This paper will discuss the student’s plans for their paper, as well as the films the student wished to explore.
