The problem can be social, political, economic, psychological, environmental, moral, philosophical––whatever interests you.Your final paper must argue a clear thesis. You don’t necessarily have to propose a solution, but you should argue something specific and something substantial about the nature of the problem. Your goal is to “open the eyes” of your readers and to compel them to care or to take action.Pre-Writing:You must first consider the problem: Why exactly is it problematic? When and how did you first notice it? Is it widespread or concentrated? Are other people aware of it? Whom does it effect? What causes it? Why isn’t it being properly addressed? What should be done about it? What needs to change first? Write down any other thoughts or questions that come to mind.Next, what do you need to investigate in order to better understand this local problem? Your goal is to seek out information so that you become an “expert.”Find two written (credible, quotable, and citable) sources that relate to your local problem. Read and annotate these two sources carefully. Highlight “quote-worthy excerpts” that you may want to include in your final paper.In addition to these two written sources, you must incorporate one creative, primary source into your paper. This source can be more “hands on” and should really help you to expose the local problem to the public. Consider the following: Whom or what do you need to consult in order to research the problem? Can you interview people, administer a survey, or visit a specific location? Can you take photos or videos to document the problem? Can you collect data or conduct experiments? How can you illustrate the problem to others? How can you convince others that this problem exists and that it should be taken seriously? What sort of evidence will people need to see in order to be persuaded? Think through all the creative possibilities for your primary source, and choose one that will help bring your paper to life.
