For your final paper, you may choose any of the below options. With any of options: you must think through one of the theoretical or non-fictional concepts we’ve addressed in class to articulate what Health Humanities means to you. It must be a different theory, or considerably different aspect of a theory, than what you have previously used for either of your otherprojects. You are also welcome to find one of your own, but reach out to me to check in so I know we are on the same page. Memoir, Oral History, and Health Humanities Project For this option, you may research a particular concern within the health humanities (perhaps even local to the in Nashville area, or your own home town) that you feel needs more attention. You may either write an illness narrative of your own or someone you know (with consent), andit may look like something memoir-driven or artistic (like Eli Clare, Alice Wong’s, or Riva Lehrer’s work), an creative non-fiction piece about someone else based on an interview with them, or something more like a piece of investigative journalism. Feel free to choose a project that speaks to you and your interests outside of this class. If you want to use this as an opportunity to reflect on your career path or patient encounters you may have had from shadowing, you are also welcome to use that (just be sure to de-identify your patients if you are unable to share this work with them). OR Creative Writing Project If you prefer, you may also write a well-researched work of fiction that tackles issues regarding the intersection of humanities in healthcare, narrative, health disparities, or medical or legal debates that pique your interest, your fantasy about a sci-fi future, or anything else you think could work. With this option, you must also include an artist’s statement that explains what inspired your work. Your theoretical framework should inform the project, but only has to appear in your artist’s statement. OR Health-related Policy or Scientific Representation Analysis For this option, you may choose either a health or health-related policy (that has been passed, or is in the works) OR a scientific study that affects healthcare and do a deep dive of the policy/study, utilizing your close reading and analytical skills.

You must consider the goals of the study/policy, the stance of the authors who wrote it, the funding sources (for policies, you may check out opensecrets.org), who the intended beneficiaries are, and who it negatively affects. While this may be the closest to a traditional academic essay of these assignments, you are allowed to reflect on these differences using your own first-person narrative forward your argument. For either option, you must track the rhetorical moves of the piece and how it gets represented in summary through outside sources. In addition to close reading the policy or study itself, please review at least four other articles that represent the policy or study (they do not need to be formal academic articles; think about what people may have read that translated the information) in order to consider how this information is meant to be publicly interpreted.
