In order to make this assignment ‘do-able’, we encourage you to focus on one particular time period; we do not expect you to trace the entire history of a topic or issue as this would be unrealistic given the scope of this assignment. Thus, you should choose a particular (and significant) point in time that you will elaborate upon through your assessment and interpretation of historical evidence (i.e., primary sources). It is expected that you effectively utilize at least three (3) primary sources in your historical analysis which can include newspapers, autobiographies, photographs and other images, and advertisements (among other materials) generated during the time period of focus. Please be reminded that a strong historical analysis requires you to go beyond simply explaining the text of your primary sources; rather, you should engage the text-subtext-context framework that we have been practicing throughout the semester in order to effectively utilize your primary sources. As a reminder, this entails the following:CONTEXT: As we have been doing throughout the semester, you will need to identify and discuss the relevant social, political, and economic contexts of the time period as these form backdrop of the key event(s), practice(s), and/or knowledge(s) that you will identify and elaborate on via analysis of your primary sources. You should rely upon secondary source materials to provide much of this contexualization.TEXT: You will need to gather and present primary documents in order to provide the reader with an understanding of the physical culture issue/topic that you have identified. For the ‘text’ portion of your analysis, you are examining what is visible/readable although remember that in most cases, you do not elaborate in great detail in your paper on what is written/visible in the text. Oftentimes, it is more useful to provide a brief summary of relevant information provided in the ‘text’, and then elaborate on the ‘subtext’ of the document (see next point).SUBTEXT: Remember that an analysis of primary documents requires you to go beyond simply stating what is written/visible (i.e., the ‘text’) to also share relevant information about the author (i.e., who created it, when, what do we know about their motivations and the assumptions informing their thoughts?), the intended audience, and the reason the text was created (i.e., why was this source produced when it was?).
