Sustainability is increasingly being discussed amongst the politicians and the public. The perception of aviation being responsible for the climate changes is increasing, with various political groups and NGO’s talking this up. In Sweden, for example, the concept of “#flyshame” is growing. “#Flyshame” is a movement to encourage sustainable travel, for example boycott of air travel favorizing train travel. Before the COVID-19 outbreak, there was a significant focus on how the aviation industry is contributing to reducing the emission. The current COVID-19 virus has grounded most commercial airliners and we see that government across the world, is providing emergency bailouts to airliners and airports, to come through this crisis. The majority of these bailout comes without specific environmental/climate targets/requirements. You have been asked to provide a written statement to the Ministry of Transportation. You must provide your view, if the massive stimulus plans represent missed opportunities in terms of cutting emission for the aviation industry. If there will be a next round of bailouts for airliners and airport operators, what environmental focus and targets should this be tied to?
