In the counseling process, even if only one individual is being seen, family dynamics and family issues are predominant (see related PowerPoint).
Sharon, a 39-year-old single parent, comes to see you for her initial visit. Sharon reports that she is aware that Tara, who recently turned 18, uses alcohol and marijuana, but disclosed that it was tolerated, with the agreement that her daughter would not use “hard drugs”. Sharon’s mother also had this same “understanding” with her when she was a teenager and it was effective. However, Sharon is visibly upset as she now believes that Tara has begun abusing prescription drugs (Oxycodone) with her 22-year-old boyfriend. Tara is close to failing out of school and has recently been arrested for drug possession. Sharon was also informed that Tara’s boyfriend may also be using heroin. Sharon is hysterical and is threatening to kick her daughter out of the home.
