What is its Purpose?To review and practice all major theories and concepts covered over the course of this semester. This includes: Semiotics, Micro Elements and Analysis, Macro Elements and Analysis, News and Documentary, Cross-Cultural Screen Literacy. (The list is meant as a reminder of the course topics covered since the beginning of the semester, not as a list that informs of terms you need to include in this project.)What Guidelines do I need to follow?1. Look at the prompts you receive below to identify the topic you will be working with in this finalproject2. Your task is to turn these prompts into one unique media text, created for a specific purpose. Youare creating a documentary for a general U.S. mass audience. In other words, the text you arecreating should be very culturally specific to the U.S.3. Your adaptation outline should model the following:Documentary:i. Define documentary mode (you are selecting only one, which is your primarymode for the film)ii. Define the purpose of your documentary (what do you hope to achieve/what doyou hope the audience gains from it/what is your message)iii. List what arguments your documentary is going to makeiv. If applicable, any sources you are using (i.e. internet research) need to be savedas pdf files and submitted with your project. Yes, you should include actual people in your documentary—you can also invent some characters, of course. You are using existing people and invent others to service the needs of your documentary.4. Write a formal essay (though no thesis) that explains the choices you have made for your documentary. This essay needs to address ALL of the following guidelines:Documentary:a. Explain your choice of documentary mode and how you aim to use it to achieve your desired outcomeb. Explain the interviewee, action and additional source choices you have made for your documentary, keeping the target audience in mindc. Explain the order presented in your documentary outline in regards to the message you are creatingd. Explain how this film reaches its respective intended target audience and sends messages specific to the needs of said audiencee. Circle back to your doc mode and and intended messages the doc sends and discuss whether they film situates itself as informing, persuading, social conscious or propaganda(You can dedicate one paragraph to each of the above points.)What is the topic? – What are the prompts? Also, what focus is your film going to have…. Are you focusing on one region of the US, are you focusing on hospitals, on nursing homes, ‘the average Joe’, unemployment,…? There are so many possible focuses and every documentary filmmaker has to select a singular focus for the piece; you will only be able to cover one aspect of the pandemic in one film.P.s.: I would recommend that you do NOT look up current non-fiction films or news stories (e.g. Frontline episode) made on the subject, as then you are getting stuck on those narratives and it will be much harder to produce original work. If your storyline is too similar to an existing program, your work may be considered ‘plagiarized’ or ‘cheated’. If you watched some pieces over the past weeks, select a different sub-focus from the one’s you have watched to avoid coming too close to an already existing piece.
