Play the part of sociologists and explain why we have the problem of toxic wastes and environmental injustice. One way in which sociologists make visible and interpret our daily lives and experiences is through theories. A good theory should help us to make sense of our lives in a new way, it helps us to interpret seemingly unrelated facts, sometimes it might even help us to predict what will happen. Barry Commoner offered one theory or perspective about the environment. He said that the economy created environmental problems because it was more focused on profit than the environment. Political sociologists offer another. They offer different explanations about who has power in this country. Sociologists don’t always agree, hence we have different interpretations of the same facts. So for example, where Commoner focuses on the economy, other sociologists focus on the relationship between the economy, politics, and citizens. As we discussed in class, Pluralist theorists ( who believe in structural functional perspectives) argue that government is successful in resolving social problems because government acts as a kind of balancer. They believe that we are a stable society where all groups are treated equally and no one group has too much influence. Elite and Critical theorists wish that pluralists were right and hope that someday what they say will be true. They believe, however, that for today pluralists fail to examine the power inequities among different groups that certain groups have more influence over government than others, such as industry’s need for profit and health. In addition critical theorists disagree with elite theorists on one point: elite theorists believe that citizens have no power—that there is no democracy in the US, only the pretense of democracy. Critical theorists believe, in contrast, that that we end up with a partial democracy; citizens have some power through voting, boycotts and protest, but the structure of political and economic power ends up excluding most citizens, who have to fight for what they want. Unequal treatment in a democracy leads to conflict and not stability, they argue, because most people in the U.S. believe in the values of democracy and justice and do not like to see these values violated. 1) Play the part of different sociologists and explain the views of pluralist, elite and critical sociologists 2)) Choose the theory which you feel best explains the structure of power in our country– the relationship between citizens, government and industry.
