Assignment Topic: Under what conditions, if any, is it morally permissible to eat non-human animals and/or use non-human animals in laboratory experiments? Justify your answer to this question by defending a clear position regarding the moral status of non-human animals. Be sure to compare your position with those presented by philosophers such as Peter Singer and Tom Regan. You may, of course, agree with one of these authors; you need not create a completely original thesis. However, make sure that you do not merely summarize their arguments without commenting on why you think their positions are persuasive compared to alternative positions. Also, at some point in your paper, you must address at least one of the following two hypothetical examples: 1.A farm, call it Vancouver Island Pastures, that allows pigs, chickens and cows to live lives that are free of unnecessary suffering… until these animals are painlessly killed for human consumption. 2.A laboratory, call it Weyland-Yutani Solutions, that performs scientific experiments on non-human animals only after carefully scrutinizing whether the experiments will contribute to curing serious medical conditions.
