Class Discussion #4: Ohio Corona Virus Policymaking
This weekend, Ohio broke its record for the most coronavirus cases in a single day. This news gives us chance to take a look at some of the concepts in chapter 7 in real-time. For this week’s discussion, start by reading the news on the rise in new cases. Then, spend some time looking over the Ohio Department of Health Website for information on policy that has been put forth in the state of Ohio: https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/covid-19/resources/public-health-orders/public-health-orders This is meant to help you identify the ways in which policymakers have responded to the public health problem in Ohio. Can you identify aspects of Kingdon’s Policy Stream Model (p. 208) in these responses?

2. Identify at least one public opinion poll that you think is important to understand for its possible implications on policymaking on the pandemic. Describe the poll results in enough detail so that someone who has not read it can understand the important points.
3. Based on your research, what do you foresee happening when it comes to policymaking on this social problem? Do you think the policy choices being made (in Ohio, for example) are being based on scientific data, public opinion, or political influence? Be sure to back your argument with logical reasoning and claims, not solely personal views.
