Weekly Assignment: Literature Analysis – Discussion Group 1

This week’s discussion has two parts: 1) Assigned Poetry Analysis and 2) Complete the reading questions for “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” listed in the Study Questions (10 for each work).

Part 1: Assigned Poetry Analysis. We are covering nine poems in this unit and they are listed below. Each of you has been assigned 1-2 poems (depending on length) to read and analyze. You may consult outside sources for help but be sure to cite any information you get from another source. Your analysis should include brief information about the author and time period and a more detailed discussion of the meaning of the poem, its form (does it have a regular pattern and rhyme scheme?), and any literary devices such as metaphor, alliteration, allusion, etc. Provide as much information as you can but be sure to discuss overall meaning and tone.

Part 2: As you are reading the two longer works (short story and essay) answer each of the questions about the works in the Study Questions for this week. There should be 10 from each work. Copy/paste your responses as part of your discussion.

Again, your post will consist of your poetry analysis AND your reading guide responses for the short story and essay. You will not be able to see anyone’s work until you have posted your own. Provide citations for all outside sources and make sure that you are putting information into your own words. By the time that everyone in your group has posted, you should have notes for each of the poems covered in this unit but please be reminded that you need to know them all even if someone fails to post. Note, in some groups two people have been assigned Poem #5. It is a complex one and deserves double coverage.
