Students will interview someone (not in this class) from a self-reported racial identity other than your own and different from you in at least one additional self-reported social category (e.g., gender identity, sexual identity, socio-economic status, nation of origin, religion, ability, etc.). You will construct your own interview questions. It is essential that you develop questions and ask them in an empathic, non-judgmental, open-minded manner.

You are a learner in this situation and the interviewee is an expert in his/her own life experiences and cultural values. Make sure to ask questions that will allow you to gather rich background data about this individual’s life.

You will want to ask questions that allow you to understand that person’s racial identity development, the current ways in which they view race and racism, the ways in which physical and mental health are regarded, the ways in which they do or do not participate in religious events/worship, their views on current events, etc.

You may want to ask them questions about their family of origin and how race was talked about at home. Feel free to be creative in constructing your interview. After your interview, reflect on how the individual’s responses are similar and/or different from what your own might have been?

What did you learn from this experience and how might it change your life moving forward? Once you have completed your interview, write up a 3-5 page reflection. Your reflection should not merely be a transcript of the interview, although you may want to include direct quotations that are particularly meaningful. The use of the first person is permitted for this paper.
