Parents of a special needs’ child are likely to report higher levels of stress than parents whose children do not have disabilities. This advocacy project will serve as a guide that parents of typically developing children can use to help parents of children with autism and other intellectual disabilities cope with parenting stress. Where will this campaign be based? The campaign will be based in Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia, a West African country. There is a significant number of children living in the city and its environs who have been diagnosed with autism or other intellectual disabilities. Describe the geographical area (i.e., local, regional, state, and national)The campaign is regional and primarily covers the City of Monrovia and its neighboring environs. The bottom line is raising regional awareness at the regional level before advancing to the state and national levels. With a population of approximately 1 million, Monrovia is the most densely populated city in Liberia. What are the specific goals you hope to accomplish? The main goal is to raise awareness for people to accept children diagnosed with autism. The advocacy project will help community members understand that autism is a disability. Thus, autistic children and their children should not be discriminated against or segregated due to the medical condition (O’Day and Goldstein, 2005).
