In California for example, Chicano/Latino students represent over half of the K-12 student population—yet a very small proportion transition to and complete college. With all public education systems HSI systems in California, it is critical to ensure that the critical mass of Latinx students are provided the opportunity to thrive. This course unpacks the socioeconomic and systemic factors that underlie the data and trends on Latinx students as they navigate the P-20 sectors. Further, to understand this persistent phenomenon and explore approaches to altering the current pathway of this group, this course will provide a comprehensive overview of issues and topics that influence Chicana/o-Latinx student access, experiences and success at every stage in the P-20 education continuum. It is critical to understand the plight of America’s fastest growing ethnic group that remains largely marginalized in education, public policy and government arenas. This course exposes students to the myriad of complex issues surrounding Chicano/Latino student access to resources and achievement trends and fosters critical analytical tools among class participants. Emphasis therefore will be placed on early learning opportunities, K-12 access and equity, and higher education challenges that inhibit Chicano/Latino college completion. Students will engage in rigorous reviews of academic literature and mixed method approaches to understanding the Chicano/Latino student experience in the U.S. education system.
