What is the value in intersectionality and hybridity?

In her semi-autobiographical novel, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, Gloria Anzaldúa reflects on her experiences as a Chicana, an activist, and a poet to challenge how we think about our identities. Like many historically marginalized people living in the U.S., Anzaldúa feels tensions within the intersections of her personal sense of cultural identity. Her novel reflects on the borders that exist between Latinx and non-Latinx people, men and women, and other identities. Select at least three passages from three separate chapters and place them in conversation to answer the following questions:How does Anzaldúa’s novel challenge single stories about American identity? How does the novel confirm and/or call into question traditional representations of Latinx life and culture? How does Anzaldúa’s use of the “borderlands” emphasize her experiences and messages? What is the value in intersectionality and hybridity? Note: Do not simply answer these questions in order. Use them to help you generate an argument (i.e.: a thesis) with clear claims, counterclaims, and refutations supported by the text. You may also draw from your own personal experiences, observations, and/or studies to support your argument, but in your essay you must directly reference, either by quoting or paraphrasing, passages/graphics from at least three separate chapters. All references to secondary sources, including Anzaldua’s book, must be quoted and cited in the essay and listed in a Works Cited page.
