What role do you think this event should play in the education of students new to this field of study/profession?

In our case study readings this semester, we have looked at the history of the Young Lords organization. By looking at a variety of first hand accounts by former members, journalists, and creative writers, we have been able to think about how such testimonials help to shape our understanding of the Young Lords and their relationship to the post Civil Rights Era, institutional racism, and inequality. The remaining weeks have us looking at what a secondary source is and how it helps to shape our participation in giving meaning to The Young Lords Party. By reading how other scholars, journalists, and writers (who have studied the primary documents) make sense of this history, we can begin to form our own judgments by adding to, drawing from, and commenting on what others have said about these documents and the subjects they cover.In other words, through an analysis of a secondary source you can create “a conversation” about the historical event, person, or text by developing your own perspective ​as one of many​ on a specific topic. Your second short paper this session will ask you to revise your first paper in a substantial way. A “critical” paper establishes your voice as a writer by evaluating ideas you read and making connections between those texts. It is a chance for you to develop an interpretive thesis — or a judgment — about the subject, theme, or text you are studying. In your first paper, you identified an important moment or event in the history of your field. You researched a variety of primary sources (first-hand accounts) about that moment or event in the form of interviews, newspaper accounts, art and other forms of media, for example. In this revision, you are asked to supplement your understanding of those primary sources by doing research using secondary sources about that historical moment or event. When you have evaluated those secondary sources, go back to your primary sources and write a critical essay that answers the following question:What role do you think this event should play in the education of students new to this field of study/profession?In your essay, please make sure to do the following:1. Write between 1200 and 1500 words.2. Follow the ​MLA formatting conventions​ for writing research papers.3. Make sure your argument and supporting details are cited appropriately when you quote,paraphrase, and/or summarize. Remember there are handouts at the ​CCAC Library webpage​ forhow to cite your sources in the text of your paper.4. Include a works cited page, making sure that you have cited at least 2 primary sources and 2secondary sources, one of which may be a popular source. The other must be a scholarly, peer-reviewed source.
