It can be any social problem in the U.S. Pick one 1) List the seven main theorists we studied this Semester in alphabetical order (with their full names) 2) Cite your Social Problem/Issue as succinctly and briefly as possible. 3) What makes this social dynamic a social issue or problem? Please note that this response is worth 5 pts. — so you will probably want to have at least 3 good rationales. You must make sure that you have illustrated the negative social impact(s) on the problem/issue. 4) Name a theorist and their theoretical perspective we studied this Semester that could help unpack the social problem/issue cited. 5) In a single statement — give the “gist” of the particular theoretical perspective — making sure that it is a completed statement AND that it meshes with your Social Problem/Issue. So the gist of the theory you express here in #5 should not only be a completed idea-but it should CONNECT to the social problem/issue that you are analyzing. For example, if you are looking at population density as your social problem don’t use Simmel’s mini-theory of the stranger as a gist! Use something from Metropolis. 6) Choose AND define a concept from the theoretical perspective cited in #4 AND explain how this theoretical concept helps to “unpack” the social problem/issue. Many of you have recently been using a concept as a social problem. Be careful here – whereas the Marxian concept of exploitation is in itself a social problem – Weber’s verstehen is NOT a social problem (the absence of verstehen would work as a concept – but that would be ugly to analyze). So, make sure that if the concept is essentially the problem that you specify the nature of the problem e.g., Nike’s exploitation of 3rd World laborers. 7) Say you were researching your Social Problem/Issue — what would be the most appropriate question to ask to see the problem/issue more clearly and/or potentially even solve the problem/issue. This is obviously the Research Question – and everyone should be pretty good at asking a probing question by now. 8) What would your testable hypothesis flowing from this research question be? 9) What type of survey or experimental design might you construct to better explain the problem/issue you are examining. Don’t forget to include your predicted outcome. If you were to do a study or experiment on the Problem/Issue — how would you go about studying/researching it and what would you be attempting to demonstrate? 10) Who was Lewis Yablonsky?
