This is the prompt “ For as much as we know of African American History, the experience of American slavery has had far more influence on shaping the contours of race relations in the Georgia than any other factor. Our lectures and assigned readings have focused on the trends and tensions that have emerged from the early experiences of Africans in Georgia. In this, Africans of different ethnic groups came together to form a resilient culture under the auspices of oppression while interacting with multiple warring European colonizers. This provides interesting perspectives to the experiences of early-enslaved Africans and the political, economic, social and historical ramifications thereof. Much of this course focuses on the Georgia Low Country, the Gullah-Geechie people, rice production and how they were able to preserve Africanism as seen through speech and customs throughout historical periods such as colonial America, the American Revolution, the new Republic, the Antebellum period and the Civil War. The documentary “Family Across the Sea” examines how scholars have uncovered the remarkable connections between the Gullah people of Georgia and South Carolina and the people of Sierra Leone.
