Why do so many people choose to have materialistic things over-affection?

Why do so many people choose to have materialistic things over-affection? Could it be that humans value objects more than companionship? If so, it could explain why many wealthy people tend to be unhappy and lonely. In the end, does money matter more than the people one cares for? They would debate that true happiness can come from money. A talk show called The Doctors spoke about a poll in which Americans were asked if they would choose love or a million dollars, and many Americans opted for a million. In the survey, among those who have never been married or unmarried, 55% would choose one million dollars over true love. However, 71 percent of those who were divorced from marriage had a higher percentage. Many would say they chose it over true love because of past bad experiences with love. They concluded that more people would prefer true love if it were rephrased differently in the study. For instance, if they were to choose between all the people they cared for, then maybe they would choose love over money.
