Uncategorized Assignment-helpChapter 7 – Deviance, Crime and Social Control – Hankins’ Take-AwaysWe discussed this during class so I will put the burden on you to cover this chapter. The Milgram Experiment is a classic video about conformity. To some degree, it explains why soldiers follow their leaders blindly, like during WWII. Take a look:ABC Channel’s Milgram Experiment remake(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnYUl6wlBF4) We also talked about informal and formal social control, and I brought up this incident that happened a few years back in 1997. Take a look:https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bad-man-on-campus/ (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bad-man-on-campus/)Do you think the students were extreme? Not enough?Be sure to read the Research Today box about Debtors’ Jails in the 21st Century. Many people believe that change should happen. And it is happening, here in Houston. Can you look it up and say something about what I am talking about?Module 24 discusses the definition of deviance. It is important to have an understanding of that. Pay close attention to Merton’s Theory of Deviance, also known as Merton’s Strain Theory. Here is a video made by some students, a little silly but still follows the theory:Merton’s Strain Theory (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6Iu9yOAhks.) This module does a good job in discussing the view of deviance from different perspectives. Cultural transmission and labels are key terms.Module 25 discusses the types of crimes. As you might recall from my lecture, white collar crime, also know as corporate crime, has a higher impact on our society when you consider the long term effect. I encourage you to review the FBI website for all types of statistics on crime.Time for a Crash Course series video:Theory & Deviance: Crash Course Sociology #19 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06IS_X7hWWI) The Social Policy box at the end of the chapter is about gun control. The mass shootings across our country in the last few decades have been heartbreaking, and the topic of gun control alway comes up when it happens. But how do you square it with our constitutional right to bear arms? That, my friend, is the argument that has no resolution. Do we outlaw guns? Or do we allow more guns so that we can shoot the shooters? Leave your comments at the bottom.
